How verification works

Every tick on a profile says what was checked, who checked it and when, and is shown as needing a re-check once it's out of date.

What each check means

Business registration (status “Verified”)

The owner's registration documents and details are reviewed. For a business created from a regulator's public list, the listing says so and has not been through this review.

Checked by: A CheckGhana admin · Valid for: Until a document or detail changes

Owner identity (Ghana Card)

The owner submits their Ghana Card and CheckGhana reviews it. Documents are kept in private storage, not on the public profile.

Checked by: CheckGhana · Valid for: Does not expire

Phone number

A one-time code is sent to the number and entered by the owner. A fixed line can't receive a code, so an admin reviews it by hand.

Checked by: CheckGhana · Valid for: 1 year

Business location

The owner's phone, at the premises, is within 20 metres of the GhanaPost point, and that point is in the assembly the business is registered under.

Checked by: CheckGhana · Valid for: 1 year

Website ownership

The owner adds a DNS record we can see, or the site is listed as the institution's website by its regulator, a government body or its industry association and then checked live by CheckGhana. We re-read verified websites every week; if one is found serving content its owner wouldn't publish, it is flagged.

Checked by: CheckGhana · Valid for: Re-checked weekly; shown as “needs re-check” after 30 days without a check

Social media accounts

A person at CheckGhana confirms the page belongs to the business, for example because the business's own verified website links to it.

Checked by: CheckGhana · Valid for: 1 year

Company registry (ORC)

A lookup of the registration number in the Registrar of Companies' records. Shown only when that lookup service is switched on.

Checked by: CheckGhana · Valid for: 1 year

Regulator lists (Bank of Ghana, SEC, NIC, GTEC…)

The business appears on the regulator's published list, which we show with the list's date. CheckGhana does not re-verify the licence itself, so check with the regulator for anything important.

Checked by: The regulator · Valid for: As current as the regulator's list

A ! marks a check that has passed its valid period and is waiting to be redone. A hollow circle means it hasn't been checked.

What a verification does not mean

  • It is not a guarantee, and not an endorsement. A verified business can still treat a customer badly; a business with no checks isn't necessarily dishonest.
  • It is not government approval. CheckGhana is an independent service and does not issue licences or certify that a business meets any law.
  • Being registered doesn't mean being fraud-free or fully compliant.
  • Details copied from a regulator's list are labelled as such. They haven't been checked by CheckGhana until the business claims its listing.

Trust score

The score reflects what a business has done on CheckGhana: its checks, reviews, compliance records and activity, with the breakdown shown on its profile. A listing that nobody has claimed, and every government body, has no score, because there is nothing of its own to score yet.

Reviews, complaints and the right to reply

  • Reviews are customers' opinions and are shown separately from CheckGhana's own checks.
  • A business can reply publicly to any review. It can edit its reply but not delete it, and it can't change or remove the review.
  • Fraud reports are reviewed by our team. Only reports we have investigated and confirmed appear on a profile, and a single report never changes a business's status.

If something is wrong: appeals and corrections

If a check about your business is out of date, missing or wrong, or a verification decision was refused or withdrawn, sign in as the owner and use the Appeal link on your profile, or email [email protected] with your business name or CG-ID, the check concerned, and any document that shows what is correct. A different member of the team from the one who made the decision reviews it, and we aim to reply within 10 working days with the outcome and the reason.
